In 1917, Bengal saw the birth of its first feature film-Satyabadi Raja Harishchandra made by J.F.Madan's Elphinstone Bioscope Company. In Madras, the first silent feature film of South India Keechaka Vadham was made by Nataraja Mudaliar in 1919. The same year The Maharashtra Film Co. released its debut film Sairandhri.

The 1930s witnessed the release of the first talkie films in Tamil (Kalidas-1931), Telugu (Bhakta Prahlada -1931), Bengali (Jamai Sasthi-1931), Marathi (Ayodhiyecha Raja - 1932), Gujarati (Narasinh Mehta-1932), Kannada (Dhurvkumar-1934); Oriya (Sita Bibaha-1934); Assamese (Joymati-1935); Punjabi (Sheila-1935) and Malayalam (Balan-1938). The Tamil version of this New Theatres release Devadas appeared in 1936. Damle and Fatehlal's Marathi film Sant Tukaram (1936) was the first Indian film to gain international recognition, winning an award at Venice.

Lahore joined the film industry when Khazanchi was produced in 1941. In the same year, the first film in Pushtu (Laila Majnu) was produced. In 1942, the first films in Sindhi (Homi Wadia's Ekta) and Marwari (G.P.Kapoor's Nazrana) were produced. The first Rajasthani film B.K.Adarsh's Babasa Ri Laadi was released in 1961, while the first Bhojpuri film Ganga Maiya Tohe Piyari Chadhaibo was released in the following year. The first Kashmiri film Naizraat was made in 1964. The first Dogri film Kumar Kuldip's Gallan Hoyian Beetiyan was made in 1966. The first feature films were made in Manipuri (Matamgi Manipur) and Coorgi (Nada Manne Nade Koolu) in 1972. The first Haryanvi film Beera Shera was released in 1973. Brij Bhumi, made in 1982, was the first film in Brij Bhasha. Manik Raitang is said to be the first Khasi film. Bhadwa Mata made in 1982 by J.H.Nayak and J.Prabhakar was the first film in Malvi. Mamata Gawae (1982) was the first film in Maithili. NFDC's Sri Adi Shankaracharya (1983), directed by G.V.Iyer, was the first full-length Sanskrit film, whose music was composed by M.Balamurali Krishna.
