D.K.PATTAMMAL
Damal Krishnaswamy Pattammal (b.1919), popularly known as DKP, is one of the finest classical Carnatic vocalists of India. She exhibited immense flair and love for music from her early childhood. She learnt the art of music from gurus like Prof. P Sambamurthy, Justice TL Venkatatarama Iyer and Ambi Dikshitar and also from the legendary composer Papanasam Sivan. She gave her first concert in 1933. She tackled with great perfection the area of 'Ragam Tanam-Pallavi', which was for long considered as a male fiefdom. It is held that Pattammal, in all her 50 years of unbroken appearances in the annual conference of the Music Academy Madras, has never repeated a single 'Pallavi'. While her music always bore the seal of consummate artistry, her renditions were in crystal clear diction, which is a hallmark of Pattammal's music. Pattammal is a recipient of several awards, which include Sangita Kalanidhi of the Music Academy, Madras in 1970 and the Padma Bhushan in 1971. The title of 'Gana Saraswati' was conferred on her by the redoubtable Tiger Varadachariar. In 1999, she has been conferred with the Padma Vibhushan and the Kalidas Samman Award.
