Purandara Dasa (1480-1564) is considered as 'the Father of Carnatic Music'. Purandara Dasa is credited with standardizing the Mayamalavagoulai Ragam as a Lesson Number One for beginning students and is said to have even composed the Sarali Varisai/Jandai Varisai (exercises in 'note' reproduction) for beginners. He formulated several graded steps and thus codified the teaching of Carnatic music. These teaching methods have survived over the centuries and are in use even today. Purandara Dasa is credited with composing several thousand songs, mostly in Kannada.
