Vaikom Muhammad Basheer 

Vaikom Muhammad Basheer (1908-1994) is one of the most popular literary figures of Kerala. The 'Grand Old Man of Malayalam novel, Basheer was nick-named as "Baypore Sultan". He has written several novels which include Balyakalasakhi (1949),Ntuppuppakkoraanentarnnu (1951) and Mathilukal (1955), the later being made into a feature film by the renowned film-maker Adoor Gopalakrishnan. Basheer's name is taken along with other well known Malyalam novelists such as Kesavadev, Thakadhi, Sivasankara Pilla and Uroob. Basheer won several honours and awards including Sahitya Akademi Fellowship (1970), Tamra for Freedom struggle (1972) and Padma Shri (1982).
