Alyque
Padamsee, known as the Communications
Guru of India, has immensely contributed to the advertising industry and
the world of theatre. As theatre director he staged as many as 63 plays in
50 years, with several of them becoming box office hits. He has to his
credit productions like Evita, Tughlaq
and Jesus Christ Superstar. He
is the author of a book, A Double Life
in New Delhi. In the field of advertisement, Alyque Padamsee is
recognised for his several innovative ad campaigns like the Liril,
Kamasutra, Cherry Blossom Charlie Chaplin and Lalitaji of Surf.

He
is one of the most accomplished contemporary playwrights who had taken the
Hindi/Urdu theatre by storm with his wonderful plays like Tumhari
Amrita, Saalgirah, Mahatma vs. Gandhi and
Salesman Ramlal.

Girish
Karnad is a very renowned and talented playwright, director and an actor.
Girish R Karnad was born at Mathern, Maharastra on 19 May 1938. He was
educated at the Karnataka University, Dharwar and at Oxford where he was a
Rhodes scholar. After working with the Oxford University press for seven
years, he resigned to concentrate on writing and filmmaking. His formidable
works as a playwright include Yayathi (1961),
Tughlaq (1964), Hayavadana (1971),
Anjumallige (1977), Hittina Hunja (1980),
Naga-Mandala (1988), Tale-danda
(1990) and Agni Mattu Male (1995).
All these plays were written originally in Kannada, but were translated into
other languages including, Hindi and English. He has also produced several
radio plays, which include Ma Nishada
and Sindhuvalli Anathamurthy in
Kannada. He has acted in several renowned films like Samskara,
Vamsha Vriksha and Kaadu in
Kannada and provided the script and direction for many Hindi films including
Utsav and Cheluvi. Besides, he has acted in several Hindi feature films,
television films and serials for Mrinal Sen, Satyajit Ray, Shyam Benegal and
others.
Karnad has
been heaped with honours and awards, including the Mysore State Award for Yayathi
(1962), Mysore Rajyotsava Award (1970), Homi Bhabha Fellowship for creative
work in the folk theatre (1970-72), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1972),
Kamaladevi Award of the Bharatiya Natya Sangh for the Best Indian play of
the Year for Hayavadana (1972), National award for excellence in Direction for Vamsha
Vriksha (1972), Padma Shri (1974), National award for the Best Kannada
film for Ondanondu Kaaladalli (1978), the PadmaBhushan and the Jnanpith Award
(1998).

One
of the leading contemporary playwrights of India, Dattani has produced 13
plays including one for the BBC.
His important plays include Do
The Needful, A Muggy Night in Mumbai, Dance Like a Man and Final
Solutions. Dattani won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1988 for his play Final
Solutions.

Pearl
Padamsee was a noted theatre and film personality who directed several
upcoming stage artists in the musical Godspell
and in another popular play Rise and
Fall of Arturo Ui. Her
other notable directorial ventures in theatres include Gieve Patel's Princes, Van Italy's Serpent
and Dostoevsky's The Idiot.
She was also a versatile actress, who is noted for her performance in
Khatta Meetha, Baaton
Baaton Mein, Junoon, Staying On and
Such a Long Journey. She
died in April 2000 at the age of 69.

He is
one of the most renowned playwrights of the Marathi theatre. He is the
author of several famous, though controversial, plays like Giddha,
Khamosh - Adalat Jari Hai, Sakharam Binder, Ghasiram Kotwal, Kamla
and Kanyadaan. Vijay Tendulkar has
been in the vanguard of Indian theatre for almost forty years. Vijay
Tendulkar's provocative socio-political plays which relentlessly and
ruthlessly explore the human psyche and the society never fail to raise a
storm. His first short story, Amchayar Kon Prem Karna, was
published in 1947 and since then, this multifaceted writer has to his credit
28 full length plays, 25 one-act plays, and 16 plays for children. Many of
his stories have been published in major Indian languages besides Marathi. He is the recipient of Katha Chudamani Award.

Thi Nani. She has recently played a central role in the tele-serial Amma.
